SPECIAL EVENTS“Drink your milk – we need more cartons!” is the cry of parents everywhere in the Puget Sound as the annual Seafair Milk Carton Derby (presented by Safeway/Albertsons) is coming soon. Since 1972, people of all ages have been putting their skills to the test to not only build a floating device out of milk cartons, but making it sea-worthy and racing it to boot. Each year, Green Lake sees about 100 of these vessels created by children, adults, families and businesses competing for prizes and of course, bragging rights. And if you have no idea on how to go about building a boat, a special boat-building demonstration will be held on Wednesday, June 28 from 4:00-6:00 p.m.
Even if the last you thing you want to do is building something out of milk cartons, the event is a kick to see in person, which is kind of a big deal with music, food vendors, exhibit booths, Seafair personalities a maybe a free sample or two.
The Lucerne Seafair Milk Carton Derby will held on July 15, 2017 at Green Lake from 8:00 a.m.-4:00 p.m. While admission is free, there is a $25 registration fee for those wanting to compete which includes four t-shirts. Those wanting to promote their business with a vessel, the registration fee is $250. Registration is free for military. Additional t-shirts are $23. The registration deadline is June 23, 2017.
Categories for race include Youth (13 and younger), Adult (14 and over), Family (mixed age division), Military, Commercial, Non-Profits and Groups and Team Challenge (which is by invitation only).
Green Lake is located at 225 NE 65th St., Seattle 98115. For more information, including where you can pick up empty milk cartons for the big day, visit the Seafair website.
